These are Canadians’ favourite sandwiches

Canadians love their sandwiches but Chefs Plate wanted to see which ones were the most beloved by eaters from coast to coast.

The food box company explored which were the most popular sandwiches in each province and some of the meals may surprise you.

When it comes to the most popular sandwich fillings, according to Google’s Keyword Planner, chicken was the top choice followed by roast beef, while bacon, lettuce and tomato took third place.

Grilled cheese, hot hamburger, fish, steak and bacon, egg and cheese also made the list.

French cuisine mattered to Canadians with two classics — jambon beurre (not to be mistaken for a ham and cheese) and a French dip also made the top 10.

Both are renowned for their meaty textures and decadent flavours, so it’s ideal for those looking for something hearty to pack away.

As for sandwiches as a whole, Ontarians love a good sausage, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich, which has seen a 400% increase in the province over the last three months.

Other favourites were bacon, lettuce and tomato sammies from those in Newfoundland and Labrador while Quebec, despite the love of a good French sandwich, preferred turkey and cheese overall.

Turkey on its own with no cheese is loved by British Columbians while Albertans enjoy a good turkey bacon sandwich.

Prince Edward Islanders and Manitobans love to dig into hot hamburger meals while those in Saskatchewan like to keep things simple with a good old-fashioned hot dog.

(Yes, apparently that is considered a sandwich.)

That love of chicken was shared by those on the east coast, though Nova Scotians like their crispy while folks in New Brunswick prefer their slathered in buffalo sauce.

What is interesting is how big of meat lovers Canadians are, with no vegetarian options making the cut.

But perhaps given the cost of groceries across the country, sandwiches are the perfect meal that anyone can enjoy — while keeping costs as low as possible.

“It’s interesting to see Canadians opting for simple, crowd-pleasing options for their sandwiches, such as chicken, cheese and the classic BLT,” a Chefs Plate spokesperson said in a statement.

“These versatile ingredients are typically loved by all ages, making them great family-friendly options.”
