MATTAWA — Demolition began earlier today to tear down the former Mattawa hospital.
Toronto-based Lions Demolition has started dismantling the interior basement with excavation expected in the coming days.
Conseil Scolaire Catholique Franco-Nord is tearing down the old hospital to make room for a new high school.
The school board hired aboriginal members in the community to oversee the process, including archeological digs around the site that includes the neighbouring Ste. Anne elementary school, said Antoine First Nation Chief Dave Joanisse who was at the site today.
Joanisse said he and Mattawa/North Bay Algonquin First Nation Chief Clifford Bastien have been involved with the school board to ensure aboriginal interests are protected and limit how much the ground might be disturbed.
An archeological dig has found partially burned human remains linked to medical waste from the old hospital.
The school board is building a new school for about 100 high school students who have been sharing space with Near North District School Board students at F.J. McElligott Secondary School.
