BOMARC MISSILE: Museum claims weapon

Posted By GORD YOUNG THE NUGGET

Posted 11 months ago

The historic Bomarc missile displayed in Veterans Park will no longer stand as a visible symbol of the city's role during the Cold War.

The missile is slated to be removed early Tuesday morning by the National Museum of the United States Air Force, which has loaned the now-defunct weapon to the city since 1979 when it was erected by the North Bay Kiwanis Club as a historic memorial.

Dave Linkie, the city's chief administrative officer, said the city agreed to the removal of the missile because it has deteriorated to the point where it can no longer be maintained.

It's a sound decsion," said Linkie, noting attempts to refurbish the missile by sanding, cutting or drilling could result in the release of magnesium thorium, a radioactive metallic element.

He said the Bomarc in its current undisturbed state does not pose a hazard, although its removal is considered a proactive step.

A release issued by the city Friday said the missile represented a part of the community's history that intrinsically tied it to global events and a positive relationship with the U. S.

We are proud to continue to be the host community for a USAF presence," said the release.

Unfortunately, the missile which was designed and built for single use and to be housed in an enclosed silo has deteriorated to the point where it must be removed."

A total of 56 of the nuclear-armed surface-to-air interceptor missiles were in sevice in Canada at North Bay and La Macaza, Que., from 1961 to 1972. In North Bay, there were 28 missiles located at the former Bomarc missile base -- the site on Highway 11 north of the city which eventually became the Canadore College Heliport.

Single-use missile? Wasn't aware they came with multiple uses.

Perhaps the term meant is single-warhead?

Sadly another piece of the City's history is to be lost. As for those of you who are happy to see it go. Perhaps you would have liked life in a Siberian gulag better.

Tiger23897235987,

Exactly how was an unarmed Bomarc Missile keeping me out of a Serbian Gulag? I see the Missile as an eyesore that represents the horror we lived with since the end of WWII until the early 90's.

I am not sure if you know this or not the Bomarc missile did not bomb Serbia or any other country back to the stone-ages.

Perhaps I am missing your point. Perhaps you spent a lot of time in a Serbian Gulag and were freed by an undercover Bomarc Missile, working for MI-5, that infiltrated your gulag and freed you and you fellow prisoners. If this is the case then please accept my humble apologies, and please share that story it sounds fascinating. But, unless you were or know of anyone who had a Bomarc Missile escort them to safety from a Serbian Gulag then your point is, well it is really kind of the opposite of well thought out.

I do believe that the turm single-use missile means that once it is fired it is gone. There is no recovery system as one can well imagine!

please excuse the typo in my previous post...TERM is what I meant

Where do I start....
First of all...Tiger said SIBERIA...not Serbia...Pay attention to detail searinggaspain. Clearly you have no idea what you are talking about. That missile represents two things..
1) A cold war protection that most people would recognize unless they are too young to remember. This city was....and still is the first Canadian hostile target....believe it.
2) There are many military personnel still in North Bay (including Americans) that support the economy in a big way. That missile means a history that cannot be ignored. The removal of this icon is indicative of what will surely occur in the coming years.....a base closure and a further decline of this city's economy.

Maybe we should ask for the Arrow back. Was part of the deal they made for us to get rid of our plane, they gave us F-101 Voodoos and the Bomarcs

This town is what the people make it! Our status and our economy has not, and is not governed by historical relics. The way our elected council has decided to run the town has destroyed North Bay more than any missile could and has a much longer impact. And NO north Bay is certainly not "a Canadian target, let alone the "first" target. Things have changed dramically over the past 40 years there mkharvie. There is absolutly no strategic benefit to targeting this town, not any more. Although I sometimes think it may be a good way to wipe out the past and the mistakes that this town has made and would give us a chance to start over. Perhaps we could do things right the second time around!

You just verified that you have no idea what you are talking about. What do you think is the purpose of this base?

Ok, whatever you say.... LOL

I am sad to see the missile go it was a part of the cities history and part of Canadian history. For me it was a symbol of pride in the Canadian armed forces as well and a sign of what Canada gave up (Avro Arrow). As for the people who are glad to see it go well would you be glad to see all of Canada's war history gone? I for one am Proud to be Canadian and I am proud of our troops and all they have done for us past and present. As for replacing the Bomark missile we should have a replica of the Missile made and put there.
